Happy Trick or Treat

Language arts: Review thesis statements via discussion and examples on board. Students were given a reference paper that contained the criteria they need to meet in order to write a good thesis statement. Students then worked in pairs to continue their peer review their argumentative essays and revise thesis statements. Most students that completed the peer review began typing their final drafts.

Reading: Today we read aloud a short skit from Star Trek.  Classes did a short assignment to follow up.  Tomorrow we will have a quiz on Bellringers and visit the library to return and check out books.  All students MUST have an AR book in class when we return from the library.

WV Studies:   Chapter 5 test tomorrow.  Students have their study guides, please study.  Monday we will do the acuity test.  Tuesday we will begin the next chapter on state and local government.

Science:  Test next Thursday Nov. 7.  Today jigsaw activity on bonding.   Dry Ice demo tomorrow.

Today we:

Reading:   Continued unit on non-fiction.  Word test from bell ringers Friday Nov. 1.

Science:  Graphic Organizer  -  today.  Dry ice demo Friday, Test Nov. 7.

WV Studies:   Finished legislative branch of the national government today.  Tomorrow we finish up the chapter with the executive and judicial branch tomorrow and test Friday Nov. 1.

Language arts: Discussed thesis statements and took notes on them. Worked in partners to peer review argumentative essay drafts. If students still have not completed their draft, it is homework. Due tomorrow.

Today our team went to the Cabell County Career and technical center.  Next month students will be signing up for H.S.    It was a good day and students got to see first hand what is available there.

WV Studies-  Students have homework due Th. Oct. 31.  Committee assignments of their representatives in Washington D.C.   Ch. 5 test Friday Nov. 1, students have a study guide we went over what has been covered so far Monday.

Language Arts:  Students who have not turned in their argumentative draft need to do so tomorrow.

Science:  The next test will be Nov. 7  study guide forthcoming.

Reading:  We began our Informational Text Reading with a story about Gabby Douglas.  Students read and then answered specific questions to demonstrate their understanding of non-fiction text.  They also named text features that were used in the article.  Tomorrow we will be touring the Career/Technical Center in Huntington.

Math:   Math 8 Worksheet of slope page 32-  finish if not finished in class today>

Language Arts:  Mr. Whitt had a substitute, students completed a comma worksheet in class, it will be due at the beginning of class tomorrow.

WV Studies:   Today we went over the study guide for the ch. 5 test which is Friday Nov. 1.  We covered the stuff that we have went over so far.  Then we started the legislative branch of the federal government.  Students have a homework assignment due Th. Oct. 31-  list the committees that our WV congresspeople serve on. 

Science:  Today acuity test for science in computer lab.  No Homework.

Happy Friday:

WV Studies:  Today we finished the constitution, Monday we begin the legislative branch.  Our ch. 5 test will be next Friday Nov. 1, they will need their study guides with them Monday, we will be going over them.

Reading:  Students presented the vocabulary word that they selected for this week.  A presentation grade was given.  We began Informational Text.  We will be working with non-fiction for the next few weeks.

Math:   Math1-  Finish today's assignment if necessary, you will have a graded assignment Monday.
              Math 8-  Finish today's assignment in necessary.

Language Arts:   Turned in essay to the substitute.  Mr. Whitt will be back Monday.

Science:  Substitute today look for Ms. Conner's post Monday

Tue:  Oct. 29 We will be going to the CCTC (team 8-A)  to tour their programs in preparation for 9th grade registration.

Great assembly today for fall sports and academics

WV Studies:  Today we continued with the formation of the constitution.  Tomorrow we will finish and go on to the structure and function of the legislative branch of the national government.  The Ch. 5 test will be next Friday the first of November.

Reading:  Students had a test on "the Monkey's Paw "and "The Third Wish".  Although they are not all graded yet, it seems that they did a very good job with these stories.  We will be presenting our Vocabulary Words tomorrow and then starting Informational Text.

Language Arts:   Mr. Whitt had a substitute today, students worked today and will work tomorrow on their persuasive essays (The Governor of WV has said that he is outlawing fast food. Students need to chose a side--for/against) This assignment will be due at the end of class tomorrow.

Math:   Continued assignment from yesterday, no homework.

Science: Students turned in their RAFT assignments...tomorrow is half credit (I will have a sub so make sure you turn it in--folder on my desk). We also took a fun RAFT quiz and turned it in. NO HOMEWORK! Good luck for football tonight! Go panthers!

Today we finished the ACT Explore test periods 2-5, then after lunch we had periods, 6,3,4-

WV Studies:  We finished notes on the Articles of Confederation,  Then students worked in groups completing a Graphic Organizer on the Consstitution.

Reading: Finish Explore, did vocab words. Test tomorrow on Monkey's Paw and Third Wish. Students may use their notes tomorrow for the test.

Science: We had 3rd and 4th period. Students got their RAFT assignments and drew for their element. The rough draft, final draft and colored drawing are due tomorrow before the bell (along with their rubric). This is worth 25 points. Students may turn it in one day late for half credit (since we worked on it in class).

Language arts: Continued work on the informercials in groups. No homework.
Mr. Whitt will have a sub tomorrow, Friday, and Monday. Students are going to begin an argumentative essay tomorrow. The substitute will have the directions. Each student will be given an assignment sheet as well.

Today students completed the interest inventory for ACT Explore, tomorrow will be the 4 batteries of test. 

Science: Today students got information about their RAFT assignment. They randomly chose their element from a "hat". They are writing ten sentences about being a valence electron in the atom that they chose. They have a rubric which I will post to the blog later on today. Since my morning classes will not be meeting until tomorrow, this is what they are doing in class tomorrow. The assignment is due before class on Thursday. They will need a rough and final draft along with a picture that goes along with their element. It is worth 25 points.

Reading:  We are doing the ACT Explore so all classes did not meet today.  In reading class students were to find a word they did not know, and a word they did not believe any of their peers knew.  They made a word card for the Word Wall.  Anyone who had not completed their essay was allowed to complete and turn in today.

Language arts: Continued informercial group work. Some groups presented. No homework.

WV Studies:  Students are continuing their study of the Constitution.  New grades are posted to grade-quick and will be uploaded to ed-line on Wednesday so look for Chapter 4 assessment, and week 1 of the new 9 weeks grades.

Math:  Math 8- p. 478 # 2-15 Due Thursday Oct. 24
            Math 1-  Equations with variables on both sides worksheet, Literal equation worksheet due Thursday Oct. 24

Hope you had a great weekend.

WV Studies-  Students got back their Ch. 4 assessment.  We went over them and grades will be posted tomorrow.  No Homework.  Ch. 5 test will be next week.  Watch for the date.

Reading:  Students completed their Compare/ Contrast essays on "The Monkey's Paw" and "The Third Wish".  For the next two days we will be doing vocabulary words for the Word Wall because the eighth grade will be taking the Explore Test.

English: Today we analyzed how to identify both sides of an argument. We identified target audiences based on infomercials. We began working in groups to create infomercials. 5th: You need to finish Of Mice and Men All other classes: No homework

Science: Today we reviewed Bohr and Lewis dot diagrams practice (p. 25 of our notebooks). Students did some on the board for extra credit. Students then finished their graffiti on elemental families. IT IS HOMEWORK IF YOU DIDN'T FINISH!

Reading:  Students worked on compare/contrast essays and read AR books.  We will finish up the short story unit next week and move on to Informational Text.

WV Studies-  Students who qualified went to Billy Bob's today for the reward day, those not on the trip had a review of material that will be on their ch. 5 test that we have covered to this point , After we came back, 7th and 8th period worked on the review. 

Next week is spirit week and ACT Explore test week!!!

Happy report cards go home today, day:

Reading:  We completed reading "the Third Wish"  Students did a chart to compare/contrast "The Monkey's Paw" to "The Third Wish".  These charts will be used as a base for an essay to be written on both stories that is due to be turned in at the end of class on Monday.  We went to the library for new AR books. ( Our next class visit will not be for two weeks)

Science: We started lewis dot diagrams today in our notebook on p. 24. Students did some practice on this and used their color coded periodic table. We also started "graffiti" on an elemental family. There is no homework tonight. Tomorrow: Students are doing a 5.1 notes interactive worksheet if they aren't going to Billy Bob's. I will be out tomorrow so be good for the sub! It is homework if they don't finish!

WV Studies:  Continued with citizenship, and started history of the constitution.  No Homework.

Tommorow is the Billy Bobs reward trip for westest scores last year.  Those that don't go will have assignments to do at school.  We will return for 7th and 8th period.

Hello, here are your class updates:

Science: Today we did a graphic organizer on elements, compounds and mixtures. We turned it in. I passed back the color coded periodic tables. Students will need it to complete their Bohr worksheets we started on Tuesday (and worked on some in class), tomorrow before the bell.

Language arts: Discussed possessive nouns and pronouns. Students took notes and have a front and back worksheet on possession and homophones. It is homework if they did not finish it in class. Due at the beginning of class tomorrow.
        5th period needs to read chapter 5 of Of Mice and Men by the beginning of class tomorrow.

Reading:  Introduced the story "The Third Wish".  We reviewed some basic reading terms in connenctions to the story; plot, mood, conflict, and climax.  We read aloud and will complete reading tomorrow.  Then students will do a worksheet comparing "The Monkey's Paw" to "The Third Wish".

WV Studies:  Ch. 5 Civic responsibilities of cititzens,  Graphic organizer-  completed, tomorrow we go on to Formation of the Constitution.  No Homework!!!!

Reading: We completed worksheets for "The Monkey's Paw" including a vocabulary list and a vocabulary card.  Students were then to read silently in their AR books if they finished everything.  Anyone who did not turn work in today may turn it in at the beginning of class for full credit tomorrow.

WV Studies:  Today we began citizen responsibilities, Posters about citizen rights were due today.  Study guides for ch. 5 test were handed out today.  The test will be sometime the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 1. 

Science: Students organized their notebooks for the 2nd 9 weeks. I gave out grades and students worked on a Bohr worksheet. There is no homework.

Happy Friday, No school Monday ISE Day!!! Note: Grades are due Monday! Be looking for updates via Edline.

WV Studies-  Today we looked at the rights of citizens, Students have a poster due on those 6 rights Tuesday, except for 3rd period which will have 10 min. to work on them Tuesday.

Reading - Worked in class in small groups on worksheets and vocabulary from short stories.  This work will be finished in class on Tuesday.  All students must have their AR book in class Tuesday.

Math: Regular Math and Math 1 both took quizzes today. Students in Math 1 had to turn in their Frayer models and equations at the beginning of class.

Science: Today I took up bathroom passes and graded three weeks worth of Bellringers. Students worked on Bohr models (class, group and individual practice) and turned them in. They also finished up their color-coded periodic tables. These are due Tuesday before the bell! Enjoy your three day weekend :)

For Mrs. Conner's class:

Students started Bohr models in their notebooks and did four practice problems. I gave out periodic tables on cardstock and students started color coding the periodic table.  NO HOMEWORK :) Tomorrow I am taking up their notebooks for bellringers as well as their unused bathroom passes. Students will also get three weeks worth of participation points tomorrow.

Happy Thursday:

WV Studies-  Today we continued on the first section of ch. 5 Governemnt.  I took a grade on their frayer models of 4 vocabulary words and we completed a graphic organizer on the 5 principles of Dem. gov.  Ch. 4 Assesments due tomorrow.

Reading:  We completed reading "The Monkey's Paw" and discussed the story.  Students finished their AR Tests for this grading period.  We will have an AR reading day tomorrow.

Mrs. Conner here: 

I missed out on getting my post in today. We finally finished our flip books on Elemental Families. We also went over the homework from last night. Students shared their knowledge on what they learned from the video. There is no homework.

WV Studies:  Today we began Ch. 5 on government.  This unit consist of ch. 5 and 6.  We will spend 2 weeks on each chapter.  We will have a test with chapter 5.  Students will be given a study guide next Tuesday.  All questions will be covered by materials in class that students can study.  No homework except for the Ch. 4 assessment that is due at the beginning of class Friday.  See the previous post for a link to the text for chapter 4 is students need to reference the book for the assessment.

Reading:  We began reading "The Monkey's Paw" aloud in class.  Students have a worksheet to complete as we are reading.  We are stopping frequently to discuss the story and the sentences since it was written in 1902 and the language is a bit different from what they normally hear.  We will finish reading tomorrow and then work on the vocabulary associated with the story.  TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY TO COMPLETE AR TESTS FOR THIS GRADING PERIOD!!!

Language arts: Discussed dependent and independent clauses. Filled out a chart on what different objects depend on. Individual assignment in which students completed sentences to by adding an indepedent clause to a dependent clause given to them. Some classes had time to watch a video clip of "Rocky" and write compound sentences that described the clip. No homework.

Math:  Substitute today was Mrs. Hyer,  Math 1 did frayer models and recognizing linear equations.

Hello and a happy Tuesday to you!

Science: Worked on our flip books. Some students turned in their homework today (great job!) Homework due Wednesday before the bell: Write 5 sentences on a half sheet on what you learned from the video: They Might Be Giants: Meet the Elements Video
I will be taking up Bellringers on Friday (3 weeks worth) and checking unused bathroom passes. There are only a few grades left to go in; make sure you are doing your best on every assignment!

Reading: Introduced "the Monkey's Paw". We covered the concepts of theme, motif, and morals. Students did a worksheet expressing their own thoughts and ideas about luck and wishing. Tomorrow we will read the short story aloud in class. All AR Tests MUST BE COMPLETED before 3:00 pm Thursday.

WV Studies: Today we finished Chapter 4 and I gave students the chapter assessment. It will be worth 100 pts. and will be due at the beginning of class on Friday. It is a 2 page preformance assesment that they can use resources on like the internet etc. If they have problems or questions they need to ask me before Friday.

Hello! Good luck to our Cross Country team and Volleyball teams tonight!

Here are your class updates:

Science: Worked on our flip books. Homework due Wednesday before the bell: Write 5 sentences on a half sheet on what you learned from the video: They Might Be Giants: Meet the Elements Video

English: Students wrote a 5 paragraph essay on the teachers of 8A taking a cross country road trip. Each paragraph needs to be 5-7 sentences and they need to underline each in their stories: onomatopeia, personification, simile and metaphor. DUE TOMORROW!

Reading: Today we had a test on "The Tell-Tale Heat". We will begin "the Monkey's Paw tomorrow.. All students are reminded that AR tests must be completed by Thursday of this week!

Math: Math 1 and Math 8 will both be having quizzes this coming Friday!!!

WV Studies: Today we finished up Ch. 4 on the Global Economy. Tomorrow we will begin the assessment assignment for the chapter. SEE tomorrow's post for more detail and a due date. It will be worth 100 pts.

Happy Pumpkin Festival Day:

WV Studies-  Today we enjoyed the Pumpkin Festival.  Monday we will finish chapter 4 and go on to our unit on government.  No weekend homework for our class.

Reading - GREAT FUN TODAY at the Pumpkin Festival......but REMEMBER we have a test on Monday on "the Tell-Tale Heart".

Pumpkin Festival tomorrow,

WV Studies:  Continued group work on personal finance and the global economy.  We will finish the section on Monday.

Science: Today we actually started adding information to our Families of Elements flipbooks. We will be working on these for the next couple of days (Monday and Tuesday of next week.) There is no homework.

Language Arts: Discussed comma usage. Looked at examples of how commas, or a lack thereof, can drastically alter the meaning of a sentence. Practiced using commas in sentences. Worksheet is homework if not completed in class.

Reading:  Today we reviewed for a test to ge given on Monday on "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe.  All students have the correct answers.  A quick review over the weekend should assure everyone of a great grade!

REMINDER TO ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS: THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN YOUR PUMPKIN FESTIVAL PERMISSION SLIP IS TOMORROW! IF YOU DON'T TURN IT IN BEFORE THE END OF HOMEROOM, YOU CAN'T GO!

WV Studies:   Today's activity on Budgeting, will finish tomorrow. No homework.

Reading: Today we went over the three types of irony (powerpoint). Students did a worksheet on the Tell-Tale Heart and turned it in. The end of the 6 weeks is next Thursday. Make sure that you do your AR test before next Thursday. Also, be sure to do your reading log.

Science: We finished up our flipbooks and decorated our title flap and turned them in. We also read section 2 of Chapter 14. No homework tonight.

Language Arts: Jeopardy review game. No homework.

Reading:  Mrs. Bates had to go home today.  The substitute gave a  Practice Skills Review Worksheet - will go over as study guide tomorrow.

Math:  Math 1- No Homework     Math 8-  If not finished with todays calcuations, they are homework to be finished by tomorrow.

Hello, here are your class updates:

Science: We did a snowball activity on elemental families. One expert student stayed behind and defended their group. We also started making a flipbook on elemental families. No homework!

WV Studies:  Today we began the last section on our chapter on economics.  We did a vocabulary activity and read.  Tomorrow we will do an activity on budgeting.  No Homework today.

Reading:  Finished the Tell-Tale Heart, began looking at the 3 types on irony.
