Thursday, October 16, 2014

Hello all! Mrs. Conner here with your class updates:

Science: Today students downloaded the Educreations app (free) and the Nova Elements app (works without WiFi) to learn about a specific elemental family. I assigned a family to groups of two or three students and gave them specific information they would need to have in order to present to the class. There is no homework and students will have tomorrow (half the class period), to work on it before sending it to my email (blupton@k12.wv.us). Those who didn't feel like they could get it done by tomorrow were encouraged to do research and get information tonight to use tomorrow.

Social Studies: Today students learned about the Division of Virginia and Ideals. Mr. Colegrove was in training all day and had a sub. Students did 3 questions after reading pg. 381 in the book and then made a poster from p. 382 (most of students got pretty far in the assignment). Students did a paragraph based off of the timeline on p. 383. Since students were unable to take their book home, I am guessing that they may have extra time tomorrow to complete the assignment.

Language arts: Discussed leads. Students took a sample lead and rewrote it to improve it. Turn it in tomorrow.
8th period needs to read to page 105 of Sherlock Holmes.

Reading: Reading "The Monkey's Paw"  No home work. Students should have turned in the 3 discussion questions before leaving class today.

Here are the instructions for the ladder method activity in SCIENCE DUE MONDAY 18TH!

Please read this to the students so that they understand the instructions:
Students, you will be showing that you remember and understand the ladder method we discussed these past two days. The correct order that you will be using is found on p. 9 of your notebooks and listed below:

kilo                hecto              deka               base                deci                centi               milli

A catchy saying to remember the order is:  King Hector Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk

Your objective is to pick ONE of the following options for showing that you understand the parts of the ladder method. For example if you were writing a story about “characters in metric land”, King Kilo could have 1000 loyal subjects! You just explained to me that you know that kilo means 1000!

How many points is this worth? You get 3 points each for correctly using the 7 parts (21 points), plus 2 points for the heading and 2 points for creativity/following directions.

1. Story: It must include all 7 parts of the ladder method: beginning, middle and end (at least three paragraphs with a minimum of 5 sentences each paragraph) and
decorate it! You can use a regular sheet of notebook paper or a recycled sheet of computer paper.

2. Poem: It must include all 7 parts of the ladder method and at least 7 lines. Decorate it!

3. Rap: You must present it to the class! It must include all 7 parts of the ladder method and at least 7 lines of LYRICS with a chorus to the tune of ____________song that you choose). You can have TWO people do this one, but EACH student must turn in their OWN copy of the rap. Decorate it!

4. Skit: You must present it to the class! It must include all 7 parts of the ladder method and have at least 7 lines of dialogue per student (up to TWO people do this one, but EACH student must turn in their OWN copy!) Decorate it!

5. Cartoon: It must include all 7 parts of the ladder method and have at least 7 blocks with something going on in each block (dialogue between characters). Please make sure the blocks are the same size and give the cartoon color!

You will have all class period today to work on it! If you use your time wisely, you will be able to finish it today!

When is this due? You will turn it in on Monday before the bell rings for the start of class J
